ROYAL TOUR OF CANADA
PRINCESS WELCOMED AT VICTORIA
(Rec. 9 p.m.) VANCOUVER, Oct. 22. Drenching rain spoiled the programme mapped out for Princess Elizabeth ana the Duke of Edinburgh in Victoria this afternoon. Thousands of people nevertheless thronged the streets to cheer the Royal couple as they drove for more than 30 miles through the city and outlying areas. They visited a military hospital and talked with wounded termer servicemen, but a visit to the dockyard and naval'base had to be curtailed because of the weather. All outdoor arrangements for a visit to the three services training college also had to Earlier the Princess and the Duke watched one of the most spectacular events yet staged for them on their tour of Canada. This was a greeting by 1000 Indians at Thunderbird Park. Against a background of totem poles depicting their ancient gods, the Indians of Alberni, Vancouver Island, gave the Royal visitors a demonstration of their tribal dances. The Princess and the Duke were then officially welcomed at ceremonies at the City Hall and in Parliament buildings, and were presented with valuable mementoes of their visit by the Government of British Columbia. For the Princess there was a necklace of diamonds and emeralds and matching ear-rings, the latter fashioned after the dogwood, the province’s official emblem. The Duke received a set of shirt studs and cuff links, also in the dogwood design, and a fishing rod and tackle for his forthcoming holiday trip. An Indian sweater for Prince Charles 'and Indian moccasins for Princess Anne were given to Princess Elizabeth.
No Complaints About Tour Princess Elizabeth had not once complained about the arduous programme mapped out for her on the tour of Canada, an authoritative source said last night The Princess had been tired on occasions, but not once had she said that it was too much for her. The view of the Royal party was that the most arduous part of the tour was now over. The source admitted that the twoday visit to Montreal at the end of October would entail a considerable number of official functions and long hours, but there was no intention of of the remaining part ■ The Princess was in fine spirits and the whole party was In “great heart" over the tour.
