ROYAL TOUR PLANS
POSSIBLE CHANGES IN ITINERARY
EARLY FORMATION OF COMMITTEE
Royal tour arrangement* in Christchurch are at a atandstill pending official information from Buckingham Palace on how far the original itinerary planned for the King, Queen, and Princess Margaret will be followed by Princess Elizabeth and the puke of Edinburgh; but the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfariane, M.P.) said yesterday that he was reaay for any changes which might be made to suit the younger couple. The present itinerary provided for the Royal party to spend five days Li Christchurch, Mr Macfariane said, but Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh might prefer to travel through the South Island by road or rail and so see more of the country. (The King and Queen were to travel by sea from Lyttelton to Dunedin.) In that case some of toe time in the cities might be reduced to enable the Royal visitors to pass through provincial centres, with perhaps brief stop*. If side trips to scenic resorts were proposed the people of Christchurch would not begrudge a slightly shorter visit, Mr Macfariane said. Planning could not continue until the itinerary was settled. The duration and the time of the tour still awaited final confirmation. If the present dates were kept the suggested functions in Christchurch would probably suit Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh as well as the King and Queen. (A formal reception, open-air welcome, a drive round the city, a trotting meeting, and a ball had been mentioned.) The programme seemed fairly well-balanced and did not have too much formality. If other centres were visited, even in the same time, the representation of local bodies and others at Christchurch functions would have to be reconsidered.
Experience in the Royal tour in Canada might cause amendment to proposals, l.lr Macfariane said; Discussions had been interrupted since the King’s operation; but a committee would be set up as soon as definite information was received.
