NORTH' CANTERBURY , FEDERATION
Mrs B.lx- Blunden presided at the halfyearly council meeting of the North Canierbury Federation of Women’s institutes, held recently at Waikari. Mrs Eaves, president ox the Waikari Women’s Institute, welcomed nearly 200 delegates and members. Miss J. Dailey represented the Ohoka Country Girls’ Club, and Mrs Irvine the Canterbury Federation. Twenty-one of the 22 institutes In the federation answered the roll-call. Mrs Blunden welcomed members from the newly-formed institute at Waikuku Beach.
Mrs H. Giles’s half-yearly report showed that instructive meetings had been enjoyed. A satisfactory financial statement was presented by Mrs B. Pearce. Mrs P, Topp, Dominion councillor, gave a report on a meeting of the council held in Wellington' Zederitly. Mrs Mckeegan reported on the housekeeper scheme, and it was suggested that a letter be sent to Miss Nolan, permanent housekeeper, thanking her for her help. Mrs Blunden presented the Kaiapoi institute with the Margaret Stewart pennant, and good service badges were awarded to Mrs H. T. Metberell (Loburn), Mrs A. W. Leaman (Spotswood), and Dr. M. Wood (Hawarden). Mrs H. R. Hulme, a member of the Marriage Guidance Council, gave an address on “Preparation for Marriage.” A display of old-fashioned baby clothes was greatly admired, and as were articles made by members Who took the arts and crafts course under the supervision of Miss Harrison, from the Adult Education Department. The sales table realised £8 7s 9d.
Amur!.—The last monthly meeting of the Amurl branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers for the year was held at the home of Mrs D. L. Rutherford, “Leslie Hills.” It was reported that arts and crafts classes conducted by the Adult Education Department had been commenced and that members would learn embroidery, weaving, leather work, and bookbinding. It-was decided to give £4 from funds towards an electric food-mixer for the Melrose Home in Nelson. After the meeting members joined other local branches at a. garden party arranged by the Hurunui executive, at which Mrs M. Bethell was the guest of honour. New Brighton.—The New Brighton branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers held its monthly meeting in St. Faith's Hall. Mrs Clarke presided. Arrangements were made for the birthday party and for the division picnic to be held at Otahuna. Competition winners were Mesdames Collins, Ellis, Wilson, Neilson, and Buschl.
Canterbury Federation.—Final arrangements for the half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes, tobeheidat Southbridge later this month, were made at a recent meeting of the' executive of the federation. It was reported that the federation had' obtained the services of a Dutch girl as housekeeper. Springston.—Mrs J. R. Tyson presided at the monthly meeting of s the Springston Women's Institute. There was a good attendance of members. Remits for the half-yearly meeting of the federation were discussed. Mrs M. D. Dickie was appointed delegate to the meeting. A talk on his trip as a member of the Young Farmers' Club was given by Mr R. Harris. Mrs Tyson thankad the speaker. Monthly competitions resulted as follows: —Smail bloom: Mrs P. V. Bailey 1, Mrs C. Williams gave an interesting talk on forestry. The sum of £1 3s 8d was collected for a food parcel to be sent to Ninfleld. Varley, who presided at the monthly meeting of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute. Plans were made for a visit to Glenelg Health Camp, for the group meeting at Lincoln, and for the hplf-yearly meeting at Southbridge in October. There was a good display of luring flowers and decorative work, which was judged by Mrs D. Chatfield and Mrs Lowcay. Most points were gained by Mrs <j. Longstaffe, with Mrs W. Downey, sen., second. An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Chatfield on the making of bouquets and floral sprays, using the
wiring method. Mrs Chatfield sang a group of songs, and was thanked by Mrs Varley. Members agreed to attend the birthday celebrations of the Templeton and Lincoln Institutes. A brlng-and-buy sale was arranged for next month’s meet-
. Burwood.—Mr« Leverett presided at the monthly meeting of the Burwood Women's Institute. A chapter from "Pioneer Women” was read by Mrs Bailey. A htotion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Liggins in the death of her husband. Delegates were appointed to attend the half-yearly meeting of the federation at
