APPOINTMENTS IN RAILWAYS
PROMOTION FOR MR W. T. LANGBEIN (New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, September 28. The appointment of Mr W. T. Langbein as assistant-chief civil engineer of railways was announced to-day by the Minister of Railways (Mr W. S. Goosman).
Mr Langbein succeeds Mr A. H. Muirson, who was recently appointed chief civil engineer. The position of inspecting-englneer, vacated bv Mr Langbein, has been filled by Mr I. M. Malcolm, formerly resident civil engineer at Invercargill. Mr Langbein joined the Railways Department in 1917 as a civil engineering cadet at Wellington and within eight years was promoted to assistant engineer in the district engineer’s office, Auckland. In 1929 he became first assistant engineer at Auckland, a position he held until 1935 when he transferred to Wanganui as assistant district engineer. After a year as resident engineer at Greymouth, he was appointed district engineer at Dunedin in 1945, and three years later was attached to the chief civil engineer’s office as inspecting engineer. Mr Langbein is an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers, and is a member of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers. Mr Malcolm’s career began in 1921 when he joined the department as a civil engineering cadet at Wellington. In 1937 he was appointed to first assistant engineer in the district engineer’s office, Wellington, and eight years later became assistant district civil engineer at Dunedin, a position he held until 1948. when he was appointed resident civil engineer at Invercargill. Mr Malcolm is an associate member of both the Institute of Civil Engineers and the New Zealand Institution of Engineers.
