SHIPPING FREIGHTS

Sir, —From the information in “The Press” this morning it would seem that the Labour Partv was correct when it stated that the shipowners would raise their rates as soon as the election was over. There is no Arbitration Court that these Shylocks have to go to, as the workers have to. All they need is a sympathetic government. The new Cargo Workers’ Union at Auckland is quite evidently taking a tumble to the methods these persons employ to gain their ends, and it should have known that something was due to happen when one of the shipping agents a few weeks ago toured New Zealand and said that the labour position had not improved at any of the ports. If the newly-elected Government is genuine in its promise of justice to all, it will have shipping rates closely scrutinised.—Yours, etc., E. PARLANE. September 17, 1951.
