SCHOOL-LEAVING AGE
PUPILS REACHING 15 DURING FIRST TERM
WISDOM OF COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE DOUBTED
Among the 28 pupils who left the Avonside Girls’ High School at the end of the first term this year were several who had just reached the age of 15. In a report to the Board of Managers of the school last evening the principal (Miss V. F. Townsend) said she questioned very much the wisdom of requiring those puplis to remain at school only for the first term of the year. “They do so most unwillingly, do not work to capacity and derive little benefit educationally,” Miss Townsend said.
“It seems the department would do well to consider allowing those who will turn 15 in February or March to leave the previous December if their parents so desire. As it is the principals are required to spend precious time that can well be devoted to willing pupils, forcing this group to remain in attendance,” Miss Townsend said.
