BIG SUM PAID IN COMPENSATION

Since the first payment in April, 1941, the War Damage Commission has paid out £1.000.000,000 War carnage contributions by property owners to the Government total £198,000,000. , . ... During the war about 3.420.000 buildings—3.l6o.ooo of them houses—were damaged or destroyed in Britain and Northern Ireland. More than 40 per cent, were in Greater London. Of the total. £689.000,000 hss gone in individual payments by the commission and the rest went to local authorities and the Ministry of works. Payments are row being made at the rate of about £250.000 a week.
