GOLF RUSSELL GRACE CUP

CANTERBURY WINS SOUTH ISLAND FINAL

DECIDING MATCH NEXT MONTH

AT AUCKLAND

The South Island final of the Russell Grace Cup teams’ match was played at the Shirley course yesterday and resulted in a sweeping victory for the Canterbury team, which beat the Southland-South Otago team by 9 matches to 0. The weather was perfect and the course in first-class order. This is the third year in which the competition has been held. The cup was given to the New Zealend Ladles’ Golt Onion by Mrs Douglas Young, Df Wanganui, a daughter of Mrs Russell Grace, in memory of her mother, who was a keen golfer and for many years a member of the executive of the union. For the competition the North and South Islands are divided into four provincial districts, and each province provides a team for the competition. <This year the SouthlandSouth Otago team beat the North OtagoSouth Canterbury team, and the Canterbury team beat the Marlborough-Nelson-West Coast team at Westport early in the season.

The match yesterday was between *he two winning teams and the winners, the Canterbury team, will now meet the Auckland team in the final at Middlemore next month.

This is the third time the Canterbury team has entered the final. In 1949, the first year of the competition, Auckland defeated Canterbury at Otatara, Invercargill, and last year Wellington defeated Canterbury at Hastings. This year Wellington was beaten by Auckland. The Canterbury team established a useful lead in the morning matches yesterday when the members won all three foursome matches. In the afternoon the southern players were more at home on the links, and although they were beaten in all their matches, many of them played very well, with the result that several of the games were keenly contested. Tlie keenest Interest was taken in the match between Miss Zoe Hudson, Dominion champion, and Mrs J K. Dolan, a leading player from Balmacewan, Dunedin. Miss Hudson began uncertainly and took three putts on each of the first two greens, allowing Mrs Dolan, who was bunkered at both holes and played brilliant recovery shots, to halve the holes. Mrs Dolan scored birdies at the seventh and took the eighth in four. Miss Hudson won- the rintli and turned for home 1 down She was out in 39 and Mrs Dolan in 38. Miss Hudson squared the match at the eleventh, won the twelfth with a birdie three, lost the thirteenth, where she was bunkered With her tee shot, and -won the fourteenth to be 1 up. The fifteenth was halved. Miss Hudson, who putted confidently on the homeward journey, won the sixteenth and took the match with a half at the seventeenth. Finishing the round, Miss Hudson Was round in 78 and Mrs Dolan in 70.

Mrs J. Salisbury, the Southland champion, put u> a gallant fight against the steady Miss V, Fleming. Miss Fleming was two up after playing the seventh, but Mrs Salisbury squared the match by scoring a birdie three at the eighth, where her 40-yard chip shot found the hole and another birdie at the short ninth. The tenth was halved, and then Miss Fleming gradually drew ahead to Win 3 and 2. Miss M. Elliott, the Balmacewan and Otago open champion, did not do herself justice in her match with Miss E. Nutt, who won 7 and 5. Miss K. Shand and Miss Helen Buchanan halved only one hole In their match, which Miss Buchanan won 3 and 2. Mrs H. Wooding, the St. Clair champion, was out of touch with her putter in her match with Mrs R. G. Edward, who was particularly steady On the greens. Mrs E. A. Lucas, also of St. Clair, who was paying her first visit to Shirley, was beaten by Miss Kathleen Rutherford.
