CASE SETTLED OUT OF COURT

GISBORNE, September 11. Full settlement among the parties on the compensation of descendants of owners of East Coast Maori Trust land blocks, sold more than 50 years ago to finance the corporate management of the lands, was announced to Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court to-day. The compensation will be based on the amounts at capital provided by tlie respective groups of owners and will be paid without interest to an aggregate of £141,000 from the present resources of the trust.' The settlement, was reached at a conference of Maori groups last night after the Court all yesterday had heard a motion by the East Coast Commissioner for a declaration of this liability for the liquidated blocks. His Honour congratulated the parties on the agreement and the open-minded spirit in which the issue had been approached.
