ARBITRATION AND CONCILIATION

Sir, —A lot has been heard lately about the method of conciliation and arbitration for settling industrial disputes. While in the main I agree with he principle, I cannot see the fairness of the pressure that is being made on trades unions for its adoption while employers are at liberty to fix their own prices for commodities. At present price control is as dead as the moa and profiteering is rampant, as evidenced by the excessive amount of advertising in vogue; even of heavily subsidised goods. Radios, neon signs, buses inside and out, hoardings, railway stations, sports programmes, newspapers, trailers on aeroplanes—the only places that seem to have escaped are the Bible and churches. Mr Holland, in a eulogy of private enterprise, said competition would keep prices down; but there is no competition and the consuming public are paying millions through exploitation.— Yours, etc, E. PARLANE. September 11, 1951.
