ARTICLES BY MR BEVAN
CONTROVERSY IN LONDON
LONDON, September 8. The publication In Lord Beaverbrook’s "Evening Standard” of a series of articles by Mr Aneurin Bevan on his impressions of Marshal Tito and Jugoslavia's role in European affairs, gathered during his recent visit to that country, has aroused a heated controversy among the newspaper’s readers. The “‘Evening Standard” on one day devoted the entire correspondence column to letters attacking its decision to print the articles and followed it up the next day with a column of letters in appreciation. So far the readers ere more than two to one in favour of allowing Mr Bevan to write in a Conservative paper—69 per cent, approve and 31 per cent, disapprove. The newspaper itself commentat “The surprising thing is that so largo a percentage should be against publication, for the freedom of the pres* is something of which Britain hat boasted for a long time.”
