CHRISTIANITY AND COMMUNISM
Sir,— Nominally our world’s future revolves ’around two philosophies of life—twin philosophies, both of Jewish (or Israelitish) authorship. The one is complementary to the other. Yet each, it appears, is prepared to bludgeon its way through to the peace and prosperity of its particular choice—a way of “blood and sweat and tears.” Marx’s redistribution of wealth is the material evidence of the working within man’s social conscience of the spiritual leaven of that mutual understanding, respect, and forgivingness advocated by Jesus. This latter purpose without the former as its remarkable achievement is assuredly neuter and unfruitful. The former without the latter is liable to end in the complete evaporation of those physical benefits of its planned dispersal. As disciples of Marx, we have learnt too well: of Jesus, too ill.—Yours, etc., FRANCIS WM. HEAL. September 10, 1951.
