MINOR RACES AT WESTPORT

DANE WINS BULLER STAKES’

Dane began brilliantly from the inside barrier position in the Buller Stakes at Westport on Saturday, and after being clear to the straight he won decisively by three lengths from Molos, which made up ground in the straight to beat Waltzaway into third place. Foremast. Fairhall Lad, Kandy Kid, and Our Ruth were Siow away, Dane leading into the back straight and on to the half mile from Colony Boy and Waltzaway, which were followed by Molos and Winning Dancer. Dane increased his lead to a length and a half racing to the straight, and he widened it with little difficulty in the run home.

Dane is a five-year-old gelding by Mishna from Nightshot and is trained at Riccarton by R. P. Register for Mr J. W. Shirtcliff. Fiddlesticks Wins Easily Fiddlesticks began smartly in the Scanlon Hack Handicap and she soon opened up a handy lead which she never looked like surrendering. After two furlongs she was two lengths clear of Valid and Jesse James, and then there was a gap to Buccleugh and Blue Star. Fiddlesticks held that lead to the straight and she had the race won just after straightening up. She won by four lengths from the fast-finishing Blue Star, which got up to beat Jesse James by a length for second. Blue Star’s powerful finishing run was a minor feature of the race, though he never looked like challenging Fiddlesticks. Valid weakened into fourth place a length behind Jesse James, and next, practically in line, were Melody King and Wealthy.

Won at Second Start Making his second appearance of the day, Boniface led all the way to win the Enright Hack Handicap. The consistent Robin Goodfellow gelding was unchallenged in the straight and won by three lengths from the win favourite, Dissenter. Hatrack, which held up the start for some, time and was very wide running out of the straight, showed speed to get up for third, three lengths further back Boniface led out of the straight and round to the half mile from Double Paper and Dissenter, with Hatrack making up ground quickly. Hatrack drew up alongside Double Paper near the three furlongs where Dissenter was handy behind them. Boniface had a handy lead round the home turn where Double Paper, hanging out, ran very wide. Boniface kept well clear of all would-be challengers to record one of the most decisive wins of the day. Dissenter made up ground to beat Hatrack easily for second. Double Paper was a moderate fourth, and next to finish were New Ruler, Hyfiier and Miss Kaweku
