WORLD CYCLING TITLE

ROME, Sept. 1 The world amateur road cycling championship was won to-day by an Italian mechanic, Gianni Ghedini, by half a wheel from another Italian, Rino Benedetti. The winner’s time for seven laps (about 106 miles) was 4hr 48mln 22sec. A Dutchman, Johann Plantaz. finished third. There were 84 starters. The pilot and a passenger in a helicopter following the race were killed when the plane crashed within sight of thousands of spectators. Plane Crashes in Sea.— None of the 33 persons aboard was injured when a Pan American Airways aeroplane plunged into the Sea near PaUsprio* Airport, Jamaica, yesterday when trying to land during a rain squall. Launches rescued the passengers and er«w of the aeroplane.—Kingston, Sept. 2.
