FISHING BOAT OVERTURNS
38 PERSONS BELIEVED DROWNED
NEW YORK, Sept. 2. Thirty-eight persons may have lost their lives when a fishing party boat capsized in rough weather yesterday. The Coast Guard said there are only 18 known survivors of the 56 aboard.
The 45ft boat Pelican turned over less than a mile from the shore when a giant wave struck her broadside on off the Lqng Island coast after she had been crippled by engine trouble. The fishermen were tossed into the water. Many others were trapped below deck as they sought shelter from the storm. Rescue boats found empty lifejackets bobbing in the water among picnic lunch baskets, thermos flasks, and hats. Divers who have recovered 10 bodies from the Pelican said to-day they thought the passengers trapped below deck had wrestled in their frenzied attempts to escape. Most of the bodies were found piled up in alleyways leading from the boat's cabin. Eighteen persons Were rescued. 19 bodies have been recovered, and 19 passengers are missing.
