GAY BELWIN WINS WELL

WINTER HANDICAP AT ADDINGTON .G'! which had finished second 12, btamate, Single Task, to the Christchurch Handicap the previous week, warm favourite for th* Wintar Handicap, and he always appeared to have «£* keeping. He wag pstith* ? na * tour lunimgs that he started to make up much ground. He was handy to Bull* Eye and Endowed at the straight entrance with Two Step, i Ri Mln * Ho,t hwid y- g»y hvo W length* ,hWl g * m * I}r t 0 wln W,U " •' k . ,,n tuaale for the ptaalnB«, Bulls Eye having a nose to spare over SweneeJUver, with half a length to Two “‘ep and Endowed, which broke just short of the post, Bulls Eye showed a great turn of speed, He broke at the •tart and Jost at least 72 yards. He moved round the field with five furlongs to run h,w _ I h ’ three lengths . was under pressure before the straight and did writ to battle on. Th* first five horse* were well deer of Mine Host and Balmoral. Gold Horizon was always about a furlong behind the field after breaking at the !! srt - Barrier Reef was alow away and Belmoral broke badly at the end of a furlong.

_ „ Stakes to Precaution KoNshJng the heavy track conditions, the backmarker, Precaution, finiahed on gamely under presaure in the straight to win the Addington Trotting Stakes. Precaution gradually made up his handicap and he moved up to challenge the leaders at the three. He drifted slightly inside the next furlong and turning into the straight he was following Indomitable, Fairy Dell, and Lady Brigade, with Damaskeen handiest of th* others. Indomitable looked the likely winner inside the furlong, but he could not withstand Precaution's strong challenge and he went under by a length. Fairy Dell, winner of th* New Zealand Trotting Stakes, went a grand race to be a neck back third. Th* Quite Sure mare made most of the pace and she finished on resolutely over the final furlong. Damaskeen, which look* to have a bright future, was a fair fourth, with gaps to Lady Brigade and Lordly, Beryl Scott, Braemamie, Helicon, and Lordly broke at the start, while Dainty Joe brok* with two furlongs to run. Helicon was pulled up' at the end of two furlongs.

Conilitioiii Suit Billy Boy Billy Boy, a noted perfqrmer under winter conditions, had everything in hi* favour to the Improvers' Handicap, and after taking charge with two furlongs to run he came on to win with ridiculous ease from Pierre, which finished on well over the final four furlongs. Billy Boy was always handy to the leaders, and he led into the straight by three lengths from Gay Lyric, Pierro, and Lahore. Billy Boy was never likely to be beaten. Pierre, which was second to Star Rosa the previous week, ran another soMd race. He should not be long winning for the Rolleston trainer, R. J. Berry. Lahore, which had made the pace in the middle stages of the race, drifted running to the straight, but he finished slightly better than Gay Lyric to beat him by a nock for third. Jimmy Dillon, which had broken soon after the start, was a fair fifth ahead of County Sheriff. Happy Joe, and the favourite, Lady Rowan, which had had every chance. Happy Joe broke badly at the end of two furlongs and he did well to finish so close up. Deris Grattan Sueeeeds Doris Grattan trailed Cariabrook for one mile and a half in the Queen Mary Handicap. She moyed past him near the three and came on to win comfortably Realm Again had started to bridge the gap turning into the straight and h* was within two lengths of her when he slipped and broke with a furlong to go. Piccolo and Scotch Drift fought on under pressure, and they finished aecond and third respectively, with a neck between them. Realm Again won settlea down after breaking: and ha finished.fast for fourth three lengths behind the third ““Scottish Nurse, th* second favourite, was never likely, and she was well back fifth, ahead of Star Rosa and Keym Sco e tch Drift, Scottbh Nurs*, Hilda Scott. Keymaater, and Star at the start. Proprietor was well back when pulled up with five furlong* to run. AUSTRALIAN RACING
