RACING OTAGO HUNT CLUB MEETING

DIABLO MAY WIN MAIN HANDICAP (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, August 24. Diablo, Detract and Brutus are the earlv favourites for the Tally-Ho Handicap, the first leg of the double at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting at Wingatui to-morrpw. These three gallopers have proved their ability on heavy tracks and that wall be. to their advantage to-morrow. There were pools of water on the track this morning and there were light showers during the day. Diablo finished third to Shar Bian and Snow Saint over seven furlongs on the second day of the Grand National meeting and he has completed his preparation for this race satisfactorily. He will be ridden tomorrow bv E. G. Low. Dunkirk is an unlikely starter and L. W. Hare, who was to have ridden him. will now ride Brutus, which will have many supporters on the strength of his brilliant win over seven furlongs on a heavy track at the Wellington Winter Meeting. Detract, which ran fourth over one mile in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham, will be ridden by B. J. Langford. The Hob snd Silence are other unlikely starters in the Tally-Ho Handicap The Mosgiel owner-trainer, D. P. Wilson said to-dav that The Tongs was a doubtful starter in the second leg of the double, the Vauxhall Handicap, in which the Siegfried gelding is top weight, with 9-12 A final decision will not be made until to-morrow, but, if The Tongs is missing from the field, the Oamarutrained Master Mariner will probably be a firm favourite. This promising Admiral’s Luck gelding has improved since the Grand National meeting, where he ran second to The Tongs over one mile on the third day. Master Mariner will be ridden bv B. J. Langford. Surfside, Lochlisten. Manuscript, and Dreenagh are doubtful starters in this race.

Sea Dog. a double acceptor, will probably run in the Otago Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase in which E. P. Corboy has been encaged to ride him. The shorter distance of the Irwin Steeplechase was expected to suit the Lord Quex gelding better, but the two miles and a half of the Hunt Club Cup may not be beyond this good jumper. He may thoroughly extent Libellula and Owenga, which are the earlv favourites.
