BUTTERFAT EXPORTS
“SCOPE FOR GREATER PRODUCTION ” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 24. Although New Zealand is the worlds largest butterfat exporter, there is still scope for greater production, says Dr. F. B. Shorland, director of the fats research laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. New Zealand at present exports one-third of the total world butterfat exports. The production of fats and oils a head of population is the greatest in the world, more than three times that of the United States and two and a half times more than Britain. Dr. Shorland says Fat and oil production in New Zealand could be increased bv the establishment of new industries. Wool grease offered great possibilities for building up fat exports. “The future world demand for crude wool grease as an anti-corro-sive is likelv to be considerable,” he said. “We could produce 17.500 tons of it. “New Zealand still imports substantial quantities of oils and fats, amounting in 1949 to more than 1.000 000 gallons, costin’ £BOO 000. “In spite of the local fish I’ver oil industry. with its considerable export market, we continue to import this commodity to nearly the same extent as we did in pre-war times, when there was no local industry. “The leather industry imports a varietv of oils but it has been shown bv th? New Zealand Leather and Shoe Research Association that some of the oils produced in New' Zealand could be adapted to take the place of these imported oils.”
