CROSS-CHANNEL SWIM
EGYPTIANS REFUSE PRIZE MONEY
LONDON, August 17. The three successful Egyptian crossChannel swimmers have refused to accept their prize money—£lsoo in all—in protest against what they described as “abusive attacks and slanders” on King Farouk. This was disclosed to-night at Folkestone by Brigadier D. R. Sabri, captain of the Egyptian team, whose swimmers gained the first, third and equal fourth places in the cross-Channel swim.
Brigadier Sabri, speaking at a celebration dinner given by the sponsors, the “Daily Mail,” said the Egyptians had read offensive articles in the newspapers in England. After declaring the swimmers’ loyalty to their King, he offered to leave the assembly. His speech was made directly after the presentation of the Festival of Britain Cups to the three winners, including Hassan Hamad, who was first in the race.
The official placings and times in the cross-Channel swim yesterday were released to-day. The leaders were: Hassan Hamad (Egypt), 12hr 12min, 1; Roger le Morvan (France), 12hr 13min, 2; Hassam Abd el Rehin (Egypt), 12hr 35min, 3; Saied el Araby (Egypt) and Brenda Fisher (Britain), 12hr 42min, equal 4.
