STATE VISITORS TO AUSTRALIA
DARWIN, August 6, Britain’s Lord High „ Chancellor (Lord Jowltt) and the Governor of New York (Mr Thomas E. Dewey), both arrived at Darwin, last night. Lord Jowitt. who is Keeper of the King’s Conscience, and must never leave Britain without the. King s permission, was Invited to Australia for the Jubilee Law Convention, He was told that it was the King’s personal wish that he should make, the journey. It is the first time a Lord High Chancellor has ever visited Australia Mr Dewey, who has just visited South-east Asian countries, said that the Chinese had taken a terrific beating in Korea and doubtless wanted a cease-fire, It was perfectly clear that the United Nations had inflicted "staggering” casualties, and that the Chinese venture for conquest had been turned into disaster. Commenting on the Japanese Peace Treaty, he said: "No treaty to be signed by 50 nations can be agreeable, to all. The objections by different nations to different provisions indicate that the treaty is a fair compromise. It is beingregarded as one of reconciliation.’ The Lard Mayor of London (Sir Denys Lowson) and Lady Lowson arrived in Sydney from London yesterday as jubilee guests of the Commonwealth Government. They will leave next Monday for New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.
Jet Fighters far Earape.—Thirtyseven jet Thunderbolts which are destined to bolster the air forces of Western European countries under the North Atlantic Treaty, arrived at Glasgow yesterday on the first stage of their journey from, the United States. They will be used by such countries as Belgium and the Netherlands.—London. August 5.
