AIRCRAFT OF FUTURE

TRIANGULAR DESIGN LIKELY

(SVfCiM CqrTWDondent N.Z.P.A.)

LONDON. August 5.

Aeronautical correspondents state that thfi, first public demonstration of the Avro 7078 Delta, a research aircraft, at a Surrey aerodrome has proved that triangular wings Will be most suitable for high-speed, highaltitude aircraft of the future, and that this will be applicable to both military and civil aircraft. The Avro Delta “Flying Triangle With an appearance like a schoolboy s paper dart—-can take oft in about ZOO yards and land in 700 to 800 ?-ards by using a parachute as a bra..e, t can also land on the raar wheels of the tricycle undercarriage with the nose high, Using the angle Of the wing m in nr brake to stop in 1000 yards. It can fly at less than 100 miles an hour. This manoeuvrability at low speed could not be achieved in most types of conventional jet fighters. The Avro Delta was originally designed as a small-scale model rather than the prototype.of the future jet fighter Its purpose was to explore the possibilities of designing large jet bombers, airliners, and military transport aeroplanes of the same shape. The tests have proved so successful already that it is expected that new type* of British and American fighters will be of the "Flying Triangle" design.
