RANFURLY SHIELD CHALLENGES

RULES MAY AGAIN BE REVISED

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 6.

When the New Zealand Rugby Union revised its Ranfurly Shield rules this year, it was felt that misunderstandings over ordinary and special challenges had been cleared up. As a result of a dispute this year between Thames Valley and North Auckland, the union will recommend the adoption of another clause in the rules. After reading the correspondence between Thames Valley and North Auckland on their shield fixture set down for next Saturday, the union ruled to-day that this was an ordinary, and not a special challenge. It was reported that the gate for the Fiji-Thames Valley match was £BBO, and the balance to the New Zealand Union £314. It was decided to congratulate Thames Valley on the excelent handling of the arrangements for the Fijians for the week they were at Te Aroha. The following appointments for Maori matches were approved;—Prince of Wales Cup match, Mr T. McDonald, manager and selector for Te Waipounamu (South Island); Messrs Winiata Tapa, E. Edwards, and T.
