THREAT TO ENEMY SUPPLY LINES
Fresh U.N. Gains In Central Korea (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SEOUL, Aug. 3. United Nations troops, tanks and bombers to-day beat down Communist opposition to secure formidable mountain positions south-east of Kumsong, on the east central front in Korea. The new Allied move menaces the Communist supply and reinforcement system between the so-called “iron triangle" on the central front, Kosong. and Tongchon, on the east coast. The Allies advanced more than 3000 yards to nearly 30 miles north of the 58th parallel. United Nations patrols again attacked north of Yanggu. and encountered strong opposition. North-east of Yanggu, patrols were unchallenged. On the western front, only patrol clashes were reported. United Nations bombers last night left part of Pyongyang in flames, after attacks on large ammunition and equipment dumps.
