AFFILIATION OF UNIONS
GOVERNMENT WILLING TO AMEND ACT (New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 31. The Government has agreed that, if returned to office, it will amend the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act during the forthcoming session to permit industrial unions and industrial associations to affiliate with national organisations whose objects are primarily related to industrial matters.
This was announced to-day by the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan). Mr Sullivan said that the Government had considered a request from the Federation of Labour that industrial unions should be given the right to affiliate with the Federation of Labour.
This request was a sequel to a decision in the Supreme Court which held that an industrial union or an industrial association had no legal right to affiliate with the Trade Union Congress. This decision might also apply to the Federation of Labour.
