PLANE CRASHES NEAR LAE
SEVEN PERSONS DEAD (Rec. 10 p.m.) LAE (New Guinea). July 16. The pilot and six passengers of a Qantas Drover aircraft were killed to-day when it crashed into the sea near Lae. The passengers included Dr. Stephen Appelhans. Roman Catholic Bishop of Eastern New Guinea, and Father Bacchus, of Lae. Both were Americans.
The aircraft, which was on a flight from Wau to Lae, crashed in bad weather. When it was overdue at Lae, a search began and the wreckage of the Drover was found half a mile from the coast, about 10 miles from Lae. Two bodies were recovered, including that of Bishop Appelhans. The plane sank in six fathoms of water and a diver will search the wreckage to-morrow for other bodies. The Drover operated on Qantas in-ter-island services. It was Aust-tralian-designed and built at the de Havilland Company’s Sydney factory.
