GERALDINE CONCRETE BRIDGE AT HANGING ROCK

COUNTY ENGINEER’S PROPOSAL The Geraldine County Council at its monthly meeting appointed the chairman (Mr A. J. Davey) and Cr. W. H. Talbot to meet the Levels County Council engineer to consider the replacing of the old Hanging Rock bridge, part of which was swept away in the flood this year, with a new concrete bridge on a more satisfactory alignment. Alternative schemes for restoring the bridge were submitted by the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward). A new bridge square to the flood flow and with 50-foot spans should be free from damage by future floods. Mr Milward said. Eight northern spans re-

mained intact after the April flood, and he assumed that the piles of the two piers near the north end would now have a rather insecure grip. One span at the south end remained, and the balance of the bridge, 230 feet, was carried away, the piles being washed out of the shingle. On the northern side below the bridge the flood caused extensive scouring, and at one point only one chain of land now remained between the river edge and the highway. Continuous bank protection over a length of about 30 chains would be necessary to safeguard the highway. This work was urgent, and would probably cost up to £lOOO. Mr Milward said Good progress was being made with repairs to the Upper Orari bridge, it was reported.
