ADDINGTON MARKET

GOOD DEMAND FOR BREEDING EWES The inquiry for breeding ewes was very sound at the Addington market yesterday, and prices were fully firm. A fair selection of Chatham Island ewes came forward and met an excellent sale. Fat. wethers had a particularly good sale and were 10s to 12s, and in cases mpre, above\last week’s rates. Fat ewes improved by 5s to 6s a head. The fat cattle sale was a big one, and after a good start sales were hard to make. STORE SHEEP The store sheep yarding included 576 lambs, 2114 ewes, and 264 wethers, a total of 2954 against 3515 last week. STORE CATTLE

The yarding of store cattle was small, and again consisted principally of calves. A small attendance watched the sale, and the demand was slacker. Prices were 10s to 15s a head below last week. Some excellent calves came from Southland, and one line of 40 Shorthorn steer calves from that source made from £8 16s to £9 8s 6d. An excellent pen of Aberdeen Angus steer calves from Brookside made £ll 18s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The yarding of dairy cattle was about 40 head, and Included very few heifers. The quality was only average. The attendance was small at the beginning and prices were well below those of last week. The sale improved as it went along, but except for the very best, did not reach last week’s prices. A registered Friesian heifer made 29 guineas. Best second, third, and fourth calvers made to £25. with an extra good Friesian at £33; mediufn made £l5 to £22, and inferior £8 to £l4. Best heifers made to £24. with one sale at £33, and others made £7 to £2O. FAT PIGS The entry of porkers was among the smallest of the season, and competition was very keen throughout. Last week’s drop of up to 8s a head was fully recovered. Choppers were in medium supply, and also met a good sale. The total entry of baconers was 21. Although bidding was not animated, a good steady sale resulted, with values on 'a par with last week. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 6s 6d to £4 16s 6d. Medium porkers, £4 19s 6d to £5 14s 6d. The entry of store pigs was again small, but contained a big offering of sows in pig. For weaners and store pigs there was a good demand at values 3s to 4s a head above those of last week. Sows met a slow sale at prices easier than last week by £2 to £3 a head. Prices ranged from £l2 to £2O. Values were:— Weaners, 34s to‘4os. Slips, 43s to 50s. Small stores, 52s to 565. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 4. With fat cattle again in short supply, prices for this class of stock showed a further increase at the Burnside sale today. The number offered was 300) with only a few pens of good class cattle, the greater portion being medium and ordinary sorts. From the start of the sale, prices were better by £2 10s to £3 10s a head, and this was maintained fairly regularly throughout the sale, with a further improvement in the concluding stages. In the fat sheep section, the offering was a particularly large one, more than 4000 being penned. The increase in numbers was helped to a great extent by a fairly large consignment from the north. The high values which ruled during the last sale encouraged outside sellers to try the market, but values did not hold.

The easing for fat wethers ranged from £1 to 30s a head, while fat ewes showed an even greater fall. The few fat lambs which were offered met with a ready sale.

The offering of store cattle was again a poor one, there being only three or four pens of ordinary class stock. Runners and vealers were also in short supply, and met with a good demand. Baconers were in shorter supply than usual, while porkers were forward in fairly large numbers. There appeared to be little alteration in the values of either class. Values were:—
