CHEESE AND LAMB EXPORTS
AWARDS BY HARBOUR BOARD
Cups awarded by the Lyttelton Harbour Board for export lamb and cheese competitions were presented to the winners at a meeting of the board yesterday. The cheese award was won by the Takamatua Cheese Company, and Mr F. A. Mclntosh, of Kaiapoi, won the cup for export lamb. In presenting to Mr S. Edie, manager of the Takamatua company, the cup for cheese export the chairman of the board (Mr F. W. Freeman) said that last season 13,353 crates of cheese had been received into store, and this season 16,715 crates had been received. He congratulated the company, which had won the cup for the first time, with 92.819 points. There had been a difference of only .84 points between the first and last of the six companies competing.
Mr G. A. Chailies the Agricultural Department’s assistant South Island supervising grader and dairy instructor said that the Takamatua company had won the prizes for export cheese and mature cheese at the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Show. The high standard of cheese graded at Lyttelton had been well maintained. He thought the cool store facilities were excellent. The Takamatua factory was also congratulated by representatives of other competing factories. Mr Mclntosh’s lambs were not only placed first at Smithfield, but also on the hooks at the North Canterbury works, said Mr Freeman, in presenting the export lamb cup, which is awarded for the best pen of three fat lambs from North Canterbury judged in London.
pie report made by the Smithfield judges indicated that some lambs travelled better than others, said Mr McIntosh. Faults not apparent on the hooks evidently developed during the voyage, and the elimination of this trouble was well worth farmers’ attention.
