HUGE GIFTS TO OXFORD
DEATH OF FRENCH BENEFACTOR (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. July 4. A French industrialist. Mr Antonin Besse. who gave £250.000 for the foundation of St. Anthony's College, Oxford. died while on a holiday in Scotland. Only three weeks ago he received an honorary Doctorate of Civil Law at Oxford. His gift was made tq the university three years ago. and St. Anthony's opened last October. At that time, it was stated. Mr Besse aimed to establish a college “where young men of character could be educated as leaders of the future.” Although Mr Besse lived in England for short periods only, he greatly admired the Oxford manner, and many executives of his business, centred on Aden, were Oxford men. Mr Besse. who also gave £250,000 to eight of Oxford's less wealthy colleges to enable them to increase their staffs and expand their buildings, was created an honorary Knight of the British Empire this year. His early life and birthplace were secret from his friends. He accumiuww huge fortunes from enterprises i in Middle East, where he traded as a general merchant, commercial agent, and shipowner.
