DEFENCE TALKS IN LONDON

DISCUSSION SOUGHT ON PACIFIC LONDON, June 17. Australia will seek a discussion on adequate defence of the South-west Pacific area as well as the Middle East at the Commonwealth Defence Ministers’ conference beginning in London next Thursday, said the Australian Minister of Defence (Mr P. A. McBride) when he arrived in London today with the Australian delegation. He added that he did not agree that the sole purpose of the conference would be Middle East defence. “We will discuss common defence. Australia’s interest is principally the defence of Australia, and our commitments in the South-west Pacific area," he said. The South African Defence Minister <Mr F. C. Erasmus) also arrived to-day. The British and New Zealand Defence Ministers are also attending the conference, which will last about one week. Canada will be represented by the High Commissioner <Mr L. Dana Wilgress). Canada has decided not to send a Cabinet Minister, believing that the conference is primarily concerned with the Middle East.
