DRIVE AGAINST REBELS
COUNTEROFFENSIVE IN INDOCHINA
(Rec. 7 p.m.) HANOI. June 5. Strong French Union forces, supported by aircraft and gunboats, today opened the first big counter-offen-sive against the Vietminh rebels who have been attacking in the Tonking delta of northern Indo-China. The Vietminhese launched the attack eight days ago on a 28-mile front along the Day River, between Phul and Phatdiem In an attempt to wrest the rich rice harvest from the French and Vietnamese. French Army Headquarters stated that a French mobile group was racing south across the Day River perimeter to trap the strong Vietminh force.
