The Governor-General of New Zealand, Lieuten-ant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, was created a Baron in the King’s Birthday Honours announced to-day. Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., who has been GovernorGeneral of New Zealand since 1946, had an extraordinary record of valour and distinction in the two World Wars. He was commander of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force throughout the Second World War, and led the 2nd New Zealand Division in action in all its theatres of war. In World War I he became a Brigadier at the age of 27. He won the Victoria Cross for valour in France, won the D.S.O. with two bars, was wounded nine times, and six times mentioned in dispatches. He won a third bar to his D.S.O. in World War 11. Educated at Wellington College, Sir Bernard Freyberg had a brilliant career as a swimmer in his youth. Between the’ two world wars he held a number of peace-time commands in the British Army. The list of honours is:—
