ARTLESS NOW AT PREBBLETON

TRANSFER TO DEVINE’S STABLES

Artless is the latest addition to C C. Devine’s stables at Prebbleton. The Nelson Derby mare has been a disappointment in her races this season, and one second placing has been her best effort in six starts. That was on September 9 at New Brighton when she finished a length and a half behind Walnut Hall in the Cambridge Handicap. She received a perfect trail, but could not get clear until too late. Last season when trained by N. L. Berkett Artless had four wins and three placings from 16 starts. Artless is a six-year-old mare by Nelson Derby from Kilrea, by Jack Potts from Colene .Pointer, by Logan Pointer from Queen Cole, the greatgrandam of Biviera and Petro Star. Artless has the ability to win beyond her present mark, and she should be a valuable brood mare when her racing days are over.

Devine is building up a large team at present. Vivanti. which has been having an easv time since Christmas, is again in steadv work, and she will probably be seen in action in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at Ashburton next month. Devine had intended casing Van Dieman in his work after the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting at which he won two races. He had a short let-up and had his first fast work early this week. 11 is likelv that he will be taken back to Dunedin for the second day of the meeting on May 19. The V. Scott co;t will be on 36 yards in the James Memorial Handicap, and his task will not be an easy one. especially if he is slow away. Brcke Badly

Isa Lei Disappoints

The Black Globe mare. Isa Lei, was a disappointment in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday. She began well and was one of the leaders in the middle stages of the race. She started to drift approaching the straight and she was last to finish. At her two previous appearances she had shown useful form, and she had been expected to show winning form soon. She may make amends the first time she is raced over a sprint distance. Promising Youngster

Brava ran a good race to finish fourth in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on Saturday after being slow away. Owned by Mr G. Frrncis, he is trained at West Melton by J D. Litten, who has a good record with young ho'se*. including Congo Song and Vedette. He is a good-looking colt by U. Scott from Protege, by Jack Potts from Abyssinia, the dam also of Übakim. sjre of Mundanlty and a number of other winners in the North Island. Brava looks as though he will eventually deve.op useful form Well-Related Milford Maid showed hsr first glimpse of form when she finished a good second to Gay Dene in the Trial Handicap No. 2 at Oamaru on Saturday. She Is a halfsister by Grattan Loyal to Scottish Nurse, winner of four races this seeson. Both horse? are raced by Mr J. Rooney, and they should be good winners for him next season. Sister Polly, the dam of Milford Maid and Scottish Nurse, was a good winner by Wrack from Our Nurse. This is the same family that produced a New Zealand Cup winner in Gold Bar. and other fine performers. *Bperdy Trotter

Glen star, which has not raced since ne was unplaced at the Franklin meeting in March, is down to reappear at -the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. The Gaillard six-year-old is cne ! of the “finds” of the season in the North Island, and tn 12 starts he has had seven wins, five of them in succession, and two placings. He is one of the fastest straight-out trotters seen in the North Island tor many years, and he is expected to win his way to a very tight mark He looks handily placed on 12 yards tn the Stewards' Handicap on Saturday. and may Start-there instead of the. Winter Handicap, in which he will be required to give away starts of up to 72 yards. Brilliant Mare Mundanity is expected to extend her record in the Adams Memorial Handicap, the main event on the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The Übakim mare has an outstanding record this season and in 14 starts she has had five wins and sight placings. The only time she failed to reach a place was at Hutt Park last November, when she met trouble in the Empire Handicap and had to be pulled un because of a damaged sulky. Mundanitv is sat a difficult task from 24 yards, but she can be relied on to make a bold showing. She has already raced well over the distance this season, and she recorded 4min 19 l-ssec when she finished th'rd to Gold Change and Old Scotch at Epsom last October. At Epsom in Devemb°r she easily accounted for two good -taxers in Scimitar and Lau-eldale in the Summer Handles’*. She start’d from 39 yards, and recorded 4min 24sec for the two miles.
