JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS

Unanimous Invitation To General

WASHINGTON, April 16. The House of Representatives agreed unanimously to-day to invite General MacArthur to address a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday. The Senate is expected to take similar action when it meets to-morrow.

President Truman’s press secretary (Mr Joseph Short) said to-day that General MacArthur was welcome to call on the President while he was in Washington. General MacArthur has agreed to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee at any time after he has addressed the joint session of Congress. Senator Richard Russell, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, announced to-day that the committee will conduct hearings on Far Eastern policy, including an investigation into the circumstances which led President Truman to dismiss General MacArthur from his Far Eastern commands. The Mayor of New York (Mr Vincent Impellitteri) to-day proclaimed next Friday as “MacArthur Day,” and ordered "one of the greatest recep tions in the history of our city.” New York plans to salute General MacArthur with the ticker-tape parade it reserves for returning heroes and visiting heads of State.
