SERVICEMEN AT WELLINGTON

455 EMPLOYED ON WHARVES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 17. A total of 455 servicemen was at present working on the Wellington waterfront, being employed wholly on either essentia) supplies or on refrigerated cargo (or Britain, said the Mayor and chairman of the Wellington Emergency Supplies Committee (Mr R. L. Macalister) to-day. He said that work on the Tamaroa at Lyttelton had been speeded up by working two shifts, and it was hoped that the vessel, together with the 200 servicemen, would be back in Wellington about April 25. Mr Macalister also reported that a shortage of salt was being felt in many centres, particularly Nelson and Dunedin, and the committee would seriously have to consider unloading salt from non-priority vessels in port.
