WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Smith Brighten.—Th* first anniversary of the South Brighton Women's Institute was celebrated with a party. Guests specially invited to attend were the Dominion president (Mrs Ross Macdonald), the president of the Canterbury federation (Mrs Prebble), and the presidents of the Mairehau, Sunnier, Mount Pleasant. Christchurch Centre, Bryntiwr, Burwood, Rapaki, and Hillsborough Women’s Institutes, and the New Brighton Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Those who took part in a sketch Were Mesdames Buxton, Lavender, Piesse, Chamberlain, and Carton. Other entertainment was provided by MesdameS Hall, Swallow, and Beck. The birthdAy cake, given by Mrs Roberts, was iced by Mrs Sadler. HUlsborough-Heathcete.—New members and many visitors Were welcomed by the president (Mrs Anderson), who presided at the April meeting of the HillsboroughHeathcote Women's Institute. Competitions arranged for the gathering were much enjoyed.
Kowal-Sefton.—A demonstration on mop making Was giVen by Mrs Hislop at the April meeting bf the Kowai-Sefton W.l. Mrs L. McGowan presided. Competitions for the month resulted as follows:—bloom: Mrs RoWe 1. Mrs Fletcher 2, Mrs Amos 3. Small bloom: Mrs White 1, Mrs Amos 2, Mrs Arps 3. Something old from something .new: Mr* White 1, Mrs Jamieson 2. Mrs Ritchie 3. Hydrangea basket: Mrs C. Petrie 1, Mrt McGowan 2. Mrs Ashwofth ahd Mrs Athos (equal) 3. Suirtner.—-The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the SUmner Women’s Institute:—President, Mrs Fenwick: secretary, Mrs P. Mauger; treasurer, Mrs Weleh: Committee, Mesdames Brake, Brocherie, Bradley, Hall, Hodson. Mauger, McDonald, Perry, Toy, Welch, Woods, and Miss Birson. Competitions for the year resulted as follows:—Most entries: Mrs Thomas. Most points: Mrs Thomas. Single bloom: Mrs W. H. Nicholson. Cluster: Mrs T. Bassett. Spike: Mrs Brocherie. Mrs Bassett, and Mrs Thomas (equal). Miscellaneous: Mrs Bassett and Mrs Hodson (equal). Lake Coleridge.—Another new member was welcomed by the president (Mrs McLellan), who presided at the April meeting of the Lake Coleridge Women's institute. Members decided to hold a card evening to raise funds in response to the appeal from institute headquarters. A presentation was made to Mrs Wilson, who is leaving the district soon. During the evening a talk on first-aid followed by a demonstration on artificial resuscitation, was given by Mr Thurston. Competitions for the month resulted as follows: —jar of autumn leaves: Mrs Harper 1, Mrs Hart 2. Collection of vegetables: Mrs Hart i. Mrs Harper, I. A trophy to be competed for monthly for the best bioom was given by Mrs Harper. The hostesses were Mesdames Colllhs and Harper. Balcairn.— The following officers were elected at, the annual meeting of the Balcalrrt Women’s Institute:—president. Mrs F. Bryant: vice-presidents, Mesdames Waller, Lilley, and Miss D. Drew: secretary, Mr# T. Moore: treasurer, Mrs W. Dfermott. The resignation of Mrs T Fleming and Mrs Frost were received Le Bon's Bay.—Mrs Hewitt presided at the April meeting of tof Le Bon’s Bay Women’s Institute. Many gifts were taken for Miss G. Truman who is to be married soon. Competitions for the month resulted PS MlhWs:—Tn-a'o sauce! Mrs W. L. Crotty I, Mrs A. Theining 2. Mils Leonardo 3. Clip of flowers: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mr* Grant 2. Mrs Reed And Miss Mould (eaual) 3. Bloom: Mrs Hammond 1, Miss Moura 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Hostesses for the day were Mrs L. MeKav and Miss Mould. North Canterbury Federation.—Nearly too members and delegates, including Several membars from the Canterbury federation and two from the ohoka country Giris’ Club, were welcomed by the president (Mrs P. Topp), who presided, at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury federation of Women’s Institutes at Loburn. Ah outline bf the Work being carried out in each institute was given by the federation secretary (Miss M. L. Mwgatroyd); and a satisfactory report on the housekeeping scheme was presented by Mrs MCKeegan. Mrt Blunden, who represented the National council of women, gave * *K6tt rebOtt On the council’s activities during the last Six months, and Mrs Smith, of Aihley, briefly described the travel group holiday spent in Plcton recently. Good Service bideel were awarded to Mesdames Hankins (Kalaooi) and C. Mason (MSson’s Flat), and other nresentatfbns were made to. Mesdames McLeod, Tobp, B. Pearce, and Miss Murga troya. A eavaieaae of fashion arranged by Mesdames McLeod and Greenwood was much enjoyed. It was agreed that £l4, the amount raised at a trading table, be sent to the Dominion federation. The following officers were elected:—president, Mrs Blunden (Waikari); vice-president. Mrs McLeod (Ldburh): honorary secretary, Mrs' H. Giles (Pines Beach); treasurer. Mrt B.
