NEW WATERSIDE UNION

MOVE IN GISBORNE MEMBERSHIP OF FARMERS AND BUSINESSMEN (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, April 16. Businessmen in Gisborne and farmers in the district have considered the establishment of a new waterside workers’ union for immediate registration. It is reliably reported that a scheme involving the enrolment only of businessmen affected by the shipping hold-up and of farmers, is almost complete. Those interested are prepared to become watersiders temporarily to effect the registration of a new union and to carry on wharf work long enough to see the organisation fully established. Many businessmen are feeling the pinch of irregular and costly replenishment of stocks, which’ are almost wholly brought by overland transport. Under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, a new union may be formed by 15 or more men who have recently been substantially engaged in the type of work to be done by the proposed union.
