LOADING OUT OF MEAT
FREEZING WORKERS AT BELFAST
DECISIONS OF UNION MEETINGS
Freezing workers employed at the Belfast works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons (Australasia) Ltd., decided by secret ballot yesterday that they would not load out any meat to be handled by servicemen for shipment overseas. The men employed at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works decided that they would load out meat. They did not hold a secret ballot. Meetings were held at the two works after the lunch hour. Between 350 and 360 men voted at Borthwick’s works, and about 300 at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works. Several weeks ago freezing workers at both works decided that they would continue normal killing but would not load out, or in, any materials not handled by watersiders. The issue of loading out meat has not arisen until this week when loadings of meat for export are projected.
