FOREIGN TREES
Sir,—Many years ago I decided that writing letters to the papers was futile but alas, it was foreordained that I should be provoked again. “M.S.S.” writes a tolerable letter, and I really would not mind him planting japonica trees along the Avon if he wishes, but three conceptions in his letter must be refuted, and even dealt with. Poplars and willows are not eyesores in winter. They need not be labelled “foreign,” therefore bad. And thirdly, to conform with the arboreal plan of the Creator of the universe, we “settlers in a new land” would cease to plant State forests, and also restore Christchurah to the swamplands of tussock and niggerhead from whence it came.—Yours, etc., PRO. April 18, 1951.
Sir, —“M.S.S.” should be supported by forest and bird lovers. Berry-bearing shrubs might lure native birds back to river banks here in Christchurch. The many shades of green and endlessly varied leaf forms of native flora would offset soring blossoms to perfection. North Island cities have evergreen beauty. Our autumnal torches might flame more entrancingly for a richer background, as once poplar and willow did in South Canterbury. Geraldine was famous when these glowed against contrasting bush trees. We complain that our native plants are dark and gloomy when huddled and herded in shrubberies. Why not blend with colour to make the most of all types of beauty?—Yours, etc., COMBINATION. April 13, 1951.
