PHOTOENGRAVERS’ AWARD

ARBITRATION COURT HEARING

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 16. Claims for the New Zealand PhotoEngravers’ Union were heard in the Court of Arbitration to-day. Wages, clock hours of work, and holiday clauses are in dispute. Mr L. A. Hadley appeared for the union and Mr E. W. Clarkson for the employers. Wage rates sought provided for an increase of 8s 4d in all sections and the 15 per cent, general wage order. The union seeks to have the spread of working hours reduced to between 8 a.m ; and 5 p.m. Granting of the union's claims on hours would not, the union said, preclude the employers’ right to work a night shift on morning newspapers. A claim is made for three weeks’ annual holidays for workers with 10 years service with a firm, or who have worked 12 months on a night shift. The union also asks for January 2 to be regarded as a paid holiday. A counter-claim that the daily hours be extended was withdrawn in Court by the employers. Decision was reserved, the Court indicating that it would visit a photoengraving plant before it made its award.
