MOTOR-CYCLING

CORSAIR CLUB Riding an old 500 c.c. Ariel machine to fill one first and two second places from four starts, the veteran grass-track rider, P. Phillips, gave an outstanding performance at the Corsair Motor Club’s meeting at White’s Bridge on Saturday. Phillips recorded the fastest time of the day in Imin 16sec for a lap of the two-thirds of a mile course, which had about 20 sharp corners and dozens of disconcerting bumps and hollows. His success was the more praiseworthy, in competition with several machines capable of speeds faster than 100 miles an hour.

The times throughout were fairly fast, and the track was in excellent condition, with very little of the yellow dust which usually adds to the difficulties of riders on this circuit.

There were several novelty events during the afternoon. A race between three side-car combinations caused much amusement, with l the passengers leaping hurriedly from pillion seat to side-car mudguard in frantic endeavours to keep all three wheels on the ground. W. Swarbrick rode his machine at speed up a wooden ramp, and leaped feet in the air through some burning petrol-soaked paper, and O. Greenwood escaped in good order from a strait-jacket while suspended by the heels 12 feet from the ground on a burning rope.

Results of races were:— 250 c.c. Championship.—S. Harrison (Triumph) 1, K. Vincent (Ariel) 2, E. Beckett (Villiers) 3; time, 7min 19 l-ssec. 350 c.c. Championship.—E. Norriss (8.5. A. 1, M.
