TROOPS WELCOME CHANGE

NEW GENERAL HELD IN HIGH REGARD TOKYO, April 12. The appointment of tough, uncompromising Lieutenant-General Matthew Ridgway to succeed General MacArthur, is widely welcomed by the troops in Korea, to whom General Ridgway has become a symbol of victory and a man to be trusted. Men of the United Nations back in Japan on leave have universal praise for General Ridgway’s methodical and successful advance up the Korean Peninsula after turning back the Chinese offensive early in the year. United Nations military quarters welcomed the appointment of General van Fleet to succeed Lieutenant-Gen-eral Ridgway, since his experience in the Greek war could be put to firsthand use in similar type of fighting and terrain in Korea. The reaction from officers was a mixture of surprise and of regret that Lieutenant-General Ridgway would be leaving his field command.
