U.N. AIMS IN KOREA

Statement To Be Made Soon (NX. press AstoetaHm—Copwtpht) (Rec. 8.40 pm.) Washington, April 10. The way is now being cleared for Freameni Truman to issue within a week or. 10 days the tong-awaited statement of United Nations objectives. United Nations diplomats raid today that they hoped it Would be possible for representatives of the United Nations who had fortes in Korea to reach agreement this week Oh the terms of such a statement. No final decision had been reached but the most popular proposal at present is that the statement—which is expected to have ah important influence upon the efforts to bring peace ih be issued by Mt TfUrhah in his capacity as head of, the State Which had been entrusted by the United Nations With the Unified COftiWtid of its forces in Korea. According to present plans, diplomatic aspects of the statement would later be further clarified by the united States secretary of state (Mrpeah Acheson) in a public speech which he is scheduled to make next week. A Statement of the Objectives of the Uhited Nations in the Korean War has been undej- study for several weeks and all the Governments concerned are understood to have submitted their comments upon the draft originally prepared by the State Department. The actioiF to be taken on the basis of the draft was delayed for some time when General MacArthur, without consultation with, Or the authorisation from, his Government, issued a Statement of objectives of his own and an offer of truce to the Chinese Communists which they rejected. It is hoped in Washington that publication of an agreed and authoritative statement on the objectives of the unified command will remove the worldwide confusion regarding United Nations policies created by tne numerous unauthorised statements by General MacArthur, at variance with the policies of the United States Government and the other United Nations Governments.
