PENICILLIN THERAPY FOR DAIRY HERDS Penicillin was first produced in Britain during’ the war years. From the initial isolation, development was concentrated on therapy for human beings. Great advances were’ made; and much of the early production was carried out by the English parent company of Glaxo Laboratories (N.Z.) Ltd., Palmerston North. It is of special interest and gratification to a pastoral counter such as New Zealand that very early in the development of the production of penicillin in volume attention was turned to its use in combating bovine mastitis (eommonl/ known as mammitis) in dairy herds. Glaxo were among the pioneers in Great Britain and New Zealand in the production of penicillin as a specific weapon against mastitis. The same laboratories that developed penicillin treatments for hqman beings, have produced Vetspen Cerate, the penicillin udder injection for mastitis in cows. Now that penicillin is available for the dairy hero, culls due to mastitis have been almost eliminated and a substantial boost given to production. Veterinarians advise a constant watch for signs of mastitis—especially discoloration ~or irregularities in the Inilk supply—and early treatment, in accordance with directions, with Vet span Cerate. —Advt.
