MARLBOROUGH WINNER

RESPONSIVE’S SUCCESS WAS OVERDUE

It has been a long time between wins for the Battle Song mare, Responsive, which won the President’s Handicap, the main event on the second day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting on Monday. She had not won since the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting in February, 1949, when she won the Halswell Hack Handicap. From' then until Monday she raced 39 times Responsive was making her fifteenth appearance for the season on Monday. She had finished fifth in the Marlborough Cup on Saturday, but that effort did not raise many encouraging hopes for a yyin on 'the second day. The change in the track after rain over the week-end probably contributed largely to her improved showing. Her best efforts earlier in the season were a second in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru. and thirds in the Waikouaiti Cup and the Peninsula Handicap at Motukarara. Schooling at Riccarton Debden (D. Arney) and St. Nat (E. G. Rose warne) were sent out to jump three of the schooling brush fences at Riccarton yesterday but they did not show mucn keenness. At the first attempt both refused at the first fence. Tried again, St. Net ran off. but Debden jumped it and went on alone to jump the first of the double, cautiously but safely, only to refuse at the second.

Debden has had little experience of jumping. He may yet show proficiency. Unusual Conditions

Unusual conditions will apply to the booking of mares to Royal Empire, the new stallion for the Australian Sledmere Stud. Owners who secure the limited number of bookings that will be available—at 300gns—will have to board the mare at Sledmere. and the first foal will have to be reared there.

Royal Empire, a French-bred stallion, is by Admiral Drake from Aethelitaed, a mare by Aethelstan.
