ATHLETICS N.Z. TITLES MEETING

Auckland Wins Shield

INTEREST IN FIELD EVENTS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 4. Wellington was robbed of its only chance of a title on fhe concluding day at the senior national athletic championships on Saturday at the Basin Reserve, when the recurrence of a leg injury forced D. R. Batten to withdraw in the 440 yards. Batten had to withdraw at the 150-yard mark. He was running in a good position and starting to forge ahead. Auckland competitors again dominated all sections and were easy winners of the N.Z.A.A.A. championship shield with 70 points. Otago was next with 32, and Waikato was third with 28. Running as an individual to defend his title. Batten won the 220 yards.

After filling second place in the mile event at five successive championship meetings M. Marshall (Waikato) won the event in great style. He was loudly acclaimed and chaired from the ground by his fellow competitors G. Hoskins (Auckland) showed commendable courage in running his threemile event the way he planned it and ignoring a noisy demonstration by a section of the public. The Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay runner, J. Jelley, led the field most.of the way. Hoskins stayed in third place for two laps and moved up to second at the start of the final mile. The crowd called for him to take a lap, but Hoskins very wisely did not under-esti-mate some of the stragglers who were starting to make a final bid. One of these was G. Louslch (Auckland), who won the six miles on the previous day. In the one-mile event the crowd saw something of the style of M. Marshall (Waikato) that gained him recognition at the Canterbury Centennial Games. More than ever before in his competition career, Marshall had a sound knowledge of his own capabilities. He kept a fast pace throughout the race and showed every confidence in being able to maintain it. In the last lap he lengthened his stride and opened up a 25-yard gap. He finished beautifully, showing a copy book style for distance running. A more matured and sounder approach to his events was noticeable with J. M. Holland, the Olympic Games representative. His splendid treble success in the hurdles was well deseived and is a fair indication of his capabilities. There was no greit surprise in the sprint events. A. A. Eustace (Auckland) beat the title-holder, C. Parker (Waikato). Parker has shown himself a strong runner, but lacks the polish that could keep him in New Zealand class Eustace has returned good, consistent performances this season. Two Auckland runners, N. T. O. Wilson and M. Golder, fought out the 880 yards. The defending champion, C. Simpson ( Otago), was not up to his previous season's form and finished third. Golder has shown improvement every season and has every indication of being one of the best middle-distance runners in the Auckland Province. The Field Events Considerable interest was taken In the javelin throw and the hop, step, and jump events. Wellington’s representative in the hammer throw, J. M. Carr, was close behind A. Fuller (Canterbury), who retained his title. The high jumping of P. Wells, former English Empire Games representative, and now a resident of Canterbury, was the best ever seen on the Basin Reserve. He cleared 6ft 4in and narrowly failed clearing 6ft 6jin. The high jump was also unique in the fact that five men reached 6ft. There was little doubt about the hop, step .and jump decision when C. Kay (Auckland) recorded 46ft Ujin, which was better than his title jump last year. Kay retained the title. In the following results, the abbreviations .used are: W..
