N.Z. SOPRANO IN LONDON
OPERA PERFORMANCE PRAISED LONDON, March 1. Making her first appearance for the Sadler’s Wells Opera as Amelia Grimaldi in Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra,” the soprano, Eleanor Houston, of Wellington, showed great promise. The packed theatre demanded nine curtain The supporting cast included Denis Dowling, of Ranfurly, who has been a member of the Sadler’s Wells Opera for some time. Miss Houston will also appear in “Don Giovanni” on March 31 and will remain with the Sadler’s Wells Opera until the end of the season, in midJuly. The “Daily Telegraph” said of Miss Houston’s singing: “She proved a valuable acquisition. She is not an immature singer, but possesses an abundant voice, well able to respond to Verdi’s great demands." “The Times” said: “She will be a great acquisition of strength.” i Miss Houston played the part of ‘Amelia opposite the Australian bass, j Arnold Mattei'S, who is playing the title part.
