Japanese Politician Urges Creation Of Army
(NX Prase Association-Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) TOKYO, March 3. . A former Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Hitoshi Ashida, to-day proposed the immediate formation of a Japanese Army of 200,000 men.
Mr Ashida, who is leader of the Democratic Party, said the army should be part of the United Nations forces. Mr Ashida said Japan must establish her own force for selfdefence, because of the growing Russian and Chinese menace. He added that 500,000 Russian troops were concentrated east of Lake Baikal. The Tokyo newspaper, “Mainichi Shimbun” said that a poll it .conducted in February disclosed that 63 per cent, of the Japanese people wanted the revival of an army sufficient to defend Japan only.
Nineteen per cent, were against rearmament; 77 per cent, wanted a United States occupation army to remain in J&Dfin fiffp.r flip nnonn fmahr’
and 64 per cent, believed that Communist forces would attack Japan if the Allied occupation troops were withdrawn.
