SURPRISES AT MOTUKARARA

WINNERS LIGHTLY SUPPORTED

The winners of both trotting races at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting at Motukara on Saturday were at good odds. Three Cheers, the 9-10 favourite, paid £24 8s for a win when he narrowly beat the favourite, Direct Link, in the Wairewa Handicap Trot. Goldbox, the seventh favourite, paid £l7 7s 6d for a win when he won the Waihora Park Handicap Trot. Three Cheers was always near the front in the Wairewa Trot, and he stalled off a strong challenge from Direct Link to win by half a head. Several horses lost their chances at the start, among them Orattan Bay, Bourbon Lass, Ringleader, Mighty Globe, Golden Joker, and Globestock.

Supreme Command ran to the front early In the race and led past the mile from Lady Rolleston, Three Cheers, Tiki Napu, and Mary Dictator, with two lengths to Scotty’s Double, then Gold Fleet, Direct Link, Sage Girl, and Vralment.

Supreme Command surrendered his lead before the half-mile was reached, and there Lady Rolleston 'das pacemaking from Tiki Napu. Three Cheers was well placed in behind the leaders ahead of Scotty’s Double and Mary Dictator. Tiki Napu held a narrow lead on the home turn from Lady Rolleston, and Three Cheers drew up to them racing to the furlong, with Direct Link Just In behind them.

Three Cheers reached the front, and in a punishing finish he lasted to beat Direct Link by half a head. Tiki Napu was two lengths back third, and Lady Rolleston was fourth ahead of Gold Fleet, Scotty’s Double, Sage Girl, Mary Dictator, Wentworth, and Vralment. First Mate Unlucky

First Mate broke inside the furlong when he appeared to have the Waihora Park Handicap Trot won. Goldbox was then left In front, the Gold Bar gelding going on to win by a length from Monty Frisco.

Lady Rowan, Fire Brigade, Doreen Axworthy, Caprice Waituna Lass, David Dryden, and Brigadier Grattan began slowly. Gambade was the early leader, and he was displaced with nine furlongs to run by Lady Glen, Klondyke moving into the trailing position. others well placed at that stage were Monty Frisco, Bedelia, Goldbox, First Mate, and June Grattan.

Klondyke took charge near the seven furlongs, and he led oast the half-mile from Shillelah, Monty Frisco, First Mate, Bedelia, Goldbox. Bleuoietro, June Grattan, Fire Brigade, and Brigadier Grattan Monty Frisco and First Mate moved forward racing to the heme turn, Goldbox also improving his position. First Mate looked like winning until he broke inside the furlong, Goldbox then

holding on to beat Monty Frisco and Brigadier Grattan into the minor placings. There was much merit in Brigadier Grattan’s third, as he was giving the leaders a big start with a mile to run.
