SERVICEMEN TO MAN WHARVES

■ YWelhngton And Auckland

PERISHABLE CARGO TO BE HANDLED

From Our Own Reporter WELLINGTON, February 26. Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel will man the wharves at Auckland and Wellington to-morrow morning.. They will handle perishable cargo. This was officially announced this evening. This is a sequel to the decision this morning by the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union to ignore the Government’s order to return to normal work.

The decision to man the wharves with service personnel was reached after the setting up by the Government of civil welfare committees in Wellington and Auckland under the chairmanship of the Mayors of those cities. The committees are representative of Government departments, the services, and various civil agencies. At Wellington Air Force personnel will be employed on the waterfront and at Auckland the Navy will do most of the work, probably with the help of the Army. The Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) said this evening that no action would be taken to-morrow against strikers or their leaders, and receivers in the terms of the regulations would not be placed in union offices in the meantime.
